Dependent-liberty

"Civic" refers to citizens who collaborate for individual happiness with civic integrity more than for the city, state, nation, or society.

Consider writing a personal paraphrase of the preamble, which offers fellow citizens mutual equality:  For discussion, I convert the preamble’s predicate phrases to nouns and paraphrase it for my interpretation of its proposal as follows:  This good citizen practices the U.S. disciplines---integrity, justice, peace, strength, and prosperity, "in order to” develop responsible human-independence “to ourselves and our Posterity.  I want to improve my interpretation by listening to other citizens and their interpretations yet would preserve the original, 1787, text, unless it is amended by the people.

It seems the Supreme Court occasionally refers to it, and no one has challenged whether or not the preamble is a legal statement. The fact that it changed this independent country from a confederation of states to a union of states deliberately managed by disciplined fellow citizens convinces me the preamble is legal. Equity in opportunity and outcome is shared by the people who collaborate for human justice.

Every citizen has equal opportunity to either trust-in and collaborate-on the goals stated in the preamble or be dissident to the agreement. I think 2/3 of citizens try somewhat to use the preamble but many do not articulate commitment to the goals. However, it seems less than 2/3 understand that “posterity” implies grandchildren. “Freedom of religion,” which fellow citizens have no means to discipline, oppresses freedom to develop integrity.

Some writers seem to use “freedom” and “liberty” interchangeably. For example, in 1769, “Political freedom includes in it every other blessing. All the pleasures of riches, science, virtue, and even religion itself derive their value from liberty alone.” Benjamin Rush to Catharine Macaulay, January 18, 1769. (In each paragraph, the emphasis is mine.)

Some suggest that the human being deserves freedom-from tyranny [I think, in order to develop humble-integrity rather than tolerate infidelity to self]. For example in 1807, Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature.” Benjamin Franklin, Maxims and Morals from Dr. Franklin, 1807.

Humility constrains the human being from the liberty-to abuse another person. For example in 1792, “Liberty is the power to do everything that does not interfere with the rights of others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of every individual has no limits save those that assure to other members of society the enjoyment of the same rights.” Thomas Paine, Plan of a Declaration of Rights, 1792.

Does “liberty” differ from “freedom” as emancipationm, as expressed in 1821? “The human mind will some day get back to the freedom it enjoyed 2000 years ago. This country, which has given to the world the example of physical liberty, owes to it that of moral emancipation also. For, as yet, it is but nominal with us. Too often, liberty is taken as license; consider the 1789 bloody revolution’s "liberty, equality, fraternity". Simon Bolivar in the Angostura Address, 1819, said, “[A]mbition and intrigue exploit the credulity and inexperience of men foreign to all political, [economic] or civil knowledge; mere illusions are accepted as reality, license is taken for liberty, treachery for patriotism, revenge for justice.” Democrat mayors and governors licensed terror in the U.S. summer of 2020. The entity We the People of the United State neglected preservation of freedom-from tyranny as hoodlums seemed to express dependent-liberty licensed and sponsored by mayors and governors who belong to the Democrat Party.

The cause of U.S. regression apparent in Thomas Jefferson’s 1821 letter (quoted above) is “the Holy alliance, in and out of Congress.” But Jefferson did not plainly state that Congress’s unconstitutional imposition of civil “freedom of religion” rather than encouragement to civic humble-integrity kept the U.S. psychologically dependent on colonial-British tradition: needing “moral emancipation”. (Incidentally, Jefferson, in 1821, mentioned Bolivar’s struggles.)

Whereas freedom-from tyranny is a human demand, only war or license granted by the victor offer liberty. Liberty is contentious, whether religious, wealth, race, gender, or other discrimination. Only responsible human independence rather than licensed dependence can encourage us to integrity, both as wholeness and as humility.

I don’t know and perceive no incentive for me to speculate.

What’s important to me is somebody’s notion that freedom-from tyranny is a human demand and liberty-to behave is a civil license.

The summer of 2020, with Democrat Mayors and Governors supporting tyrants’ license to harm people, property, and order, convinced me that I do not support liberty at all. Too often, liberty is egocentric license to draw somebody else’s blood.

I once promoted “responsible human liberty,” and dropped it for “responsible human independence.” People who foster dependence are aliens to the proffered U.S. people’s proportion. Thomas Paine called them traitors in “Common Sense,” 1776---a precursor to the 1787 proffered proposition.

I think fellow-citizens ought to develop humble-integrity in self-interest. That is to say, responsibly pursue the happiness they prefer by appreciating fellow-citizens who develop human responsibility.

To answer, let me express how I interpret your question. First by “undeniable-truth” you mean, to me, the-objective-truth if not the-ineluctable-truth, most of which humankind does not know.

Humankind conducts research on the-ineluctable-evidence to discover the-objective-truth. Further, humankind invents new instruments-of and explores new modes-of perception in order to improve the-objective-truth and approach if not attain the-ineluctable-truth.

In your individual pursuit of the-objective-truth, you maintain the position “I don’t know” when that is so, yet wish to express your opinion so that fellow-citizens can comprehend it and share ideas that could improve your comprehension. To so aid your quest, and you perceive aiding others, the listener must be willing to comprehend your words, phrases, and statements, much as I am trying to understand “undeniable truth”.

Your shareable insight is that to accomplish civic connection, follow-citizens must listen with integrity to the speaker’s language, clarify the message, and sincerely respond whether negatively or positively. When listener speaks, speaker swaps to listener, so as to mutually enhance each opinion toward the-objective-truth if not the-ineluctable-truth. The fellow-citizens continue this iterative listening until both are satisfied that the civic discovery is mutually comprehended and future actions will be better; that is, behaviors closer to responsible-human-independence yet serving the individual person’s responsible pursuit of happiness.

I can’t say that it has changed me. I did not like the book as I read it. Also, I have always felt that the time to act is now.

Not to change the subject, and thinking I’m not, on 9/11 our employees met at the portico of our main building for a minute of silence. Identity is formed and shaped by a person’s response to the necessity of human self-discipline. Only the human species has the awareness and grammar by which to choose a lifestyle, good or bad.

First, the newborn may be coached and encouraged to accept being a human being. No culture I know of shares the Merriam-Webster antonyms: animal, beast, beastie, brute, and critter. It was a shock to me. I have known criminal fellow-citizens but encountered a human-opposite only once in my life, I think.

Second, youth may be coached and encouraged to accept human, individual power, individual energy, and individual authority (HIPEA) to either develop humble-integrity or tolerate infidelity to their unique person. I know of no culture whose Education Departments inculcate these principles.

Third, necessity assigns to man&woman the responsibility to constrain chaos on earth. I know of no civilization that teaches the principle of spousal appreciation and fidelity in order to lessen the chaos their posterity must face.

Consequently, the countless ova that fertile women produce have small chance to receive the dignity and equity they are due: conception by a man&woman who will appreciate the gestated and born human-being for life.

Not to blame Mom and Dad, who did their best, but I was reared to worship and praise their divided, doctrinal Gods (even though they attended the same church-institution). It took me 5 decades to discover and begin to nurture Phil Beaver, a person who trusts-in and commits-to the-ineluctable-truth. Thereby, when I do not know the-objective-truth, I accept “I do not know.”

If I had not discovered and accepted my person, I would still be nurturing a false identity. I doubt it would be one of those Mom or Dad had in mind for me. But it would not be the pursuit of humble-integrity, by which I try to measure my personal integrity.

A culture that intends these principles was proffered in the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. Congress regressed it with the 1791 Bill of Rights. It usurps the humble-integrity expressed in colonial American documents dated 1774, 1776, and 1784, and matured in the 1787 Constitution.

This is a multicultural world, so that part is easy.

Most of us are human beings. But some behave as opposites. Merriam-Webster online informs us that near-opposites of “human being” include animal, beast, beastie, brute, and critter.” Plant is in a different biological phylum. I can think of no way to establish peace with human opposites than to constraint them.

Among the human beings, some think crime pays. Civic citizens encourage criminals to reform or risk constraint. But consider the criminality that has consumed the U.S. Democrat Party. Democrat Mayors and Governors made the summer of 2020 a domestic reign of terror. They granted license to human- opposites who, for example, smashed people in the face from behind in the dark of night to express egocentric liberty. Call it solidarity’s terror for bloody-liberty again. With this evidence, I cannot envision “responsible human liberty” and hope you and I will consider “responsible human independence.” With responsible human independence (or your improvement), an individual can reject solidarity and report harm-intentions to first responders.

Ethics varies with culture, civilization, and association. For humankind, ethics is discovered by comprehending the ineluctable evidence and learning how to responsibly apply the discovery. Ethics is the journal of discovery under humble-integrity to the-ineluctable-truth. Some people use HIPEA to develop crime, because they think crime pays. They are nevertheless fellow-citizens and human beings. They have a sense of right and wrong that is not in their self-interest; they subject themselves to statutory law-enforcement; they tolerate bad morals. But the moment they perceive humble-integrity in their self-interest, they can reform. Citizens who develop humble-integrity do all they can to encourage good morals.

However, people who tolerate any of the MW opposites to “human being” don’t ponder morals. Human beings must constrain animals, beasts, beasties, brutes, and critters.

In a positive example, the other night, I woke up recalling words I spoke that could be taken as offensive. The next morning, I called the person and described my error and apologized. The other party said he had not reacted but comprehends that he could have taken offense and forgave me. That’s a true story, not fiction for my post.

Einstein is not recognized as a political philosopher, I think because he wrote for the people who invited him to speak rather than for the proprietary, political philosophy white tower. He would have served us better if he had accepted and expressed his brilliance. For example, I think his nonsense for the audience, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind" would serve humble-integrity better as “Research without evidence is speculation, evidence without research is confusion.”

In other words, religion has no role in either research or developing humble-integrity.

Unpacking this, administration refers to reported harm, suspect accusation or arrest, indictment, arraignment, discovery, prosecution and defense preparations, judicial guidance, trial, and verdict. This incomplete list may be divided into law-enforcement and adjudication. “What is just” follows written law and prevails even if injustice is discovered. When injustice is discovered, the law may be amended to remedy the problem, and thereby, statutory justice may be approached.

For viability, the American judicial system seeks adversarial trials that hinge on reasonable doubt created by the defense or prevented by the prosecution. This provision introduces an element of injustice depending upon the preparation and skills on each side of the debate.

In jury trials, the Supreme Court recently required states to provide unanimous verdicts rather than the impartial verdicts made possible by majority verdicts. There are two ironies involved in the Ramos v. Louisiana (2020) opinion. First, the court used colonial-English precedent to favor unanimous verdicts whereas England in 1967 adopted majority verdicts, 10:2, in order to lessen organized-crime influence on jury trials; it’s a matter of statistics. That is, with 51:49 inhabitants, it is unlikely to obtain 100% vote for justice. Second, the US Supreme Court, notorious for a 5:4 political split among justices voted 6:3 to force the injustice of 12:0 juries on the entity We the People of the United States. Tyranny in the highest judicial office seems unashamed!

Only US citizens can hold the US Supreme Court responsible for its tyranny. And only by developing the humble-integrity to hold injustice to a fellow-citizen as lessening fellow-citizens’ self-interest can the work to develop statutory justice emerge as a people’s priority.

Ineluctably good citizens behave for equity under statutory justice, and the 1787 US Constitution proposes responsible human independence. So far, citizens have not established US practices and are still bemused by colonial-English-tradition.

Eventually, justice may create human dignity and equity among our fellow citizens who are judges. We’ll soon know immediate chances for an achievable better future.

Consider first that moral development is in a human being’s self-interest:  Man and woman are charged by necessity to constrain chaos in their lives.

Merriam-Webster informs us that near-opposites of “human being” include animal, beastbeastie, brute, and critter. Plant is in a different biological phylum.

The human infant is civically uninformed. Whereas a foal walks in about an hour after birth, a baby takes a year to learn to stand and walk. Similarly, it takes a baby a quarter-century to complete construction of their brain. Without early coaching and encouragement to take charge of acquiring the comprehension and discipline to intend a psychologically-complete human lifetime, the individual may continuously tolerate infidelity to self rather than develop the humble-integrity required for responsible human independence. The consequence is chaos in their lives, and for some, early death.

I know of no culture that instills these principles and beyond in their youth. However, one was developed and proffered in the 1787 U.S. Constitution. The documents leading to separation from England also express humility toward both civic authority (responsible human independence) and spiritual privacy (individual motivation and inspiration to constrain chaos for living, whether afterdeath is a goal or not). Afterdeath is that vast time after mind, body, and person stop functioning.

I have been stumped many times.

I think Genesis 1:28’s demand to man and woman, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it” emerges from necessity. If man and woman don’t appreciate each other enough to mutually attend to their bodies, minds, and persons, they beg chaos on earth. If they squabble as to whether “God” refers to the quest for humble-integrity or to necessity, they are attempting to reverse the demand to take responsibility for life on earth.

The Gensis-1 demand has been around for over 4 thousand years. A proffered people’s proposition to develop responsible human independence is neglected for 233 years. It is described in the 1774 Articles of Agreement, the 1776 Declaration of Independence, and the 1787 U.S. Constitution, especially in its preamble.

It is time to dust off the preamble, interpret it for personal guidance toward civic, civil, legal, and spiritually-private ways of living. It is time to start practicing for the well-developed, personal preamble-interpretation before it is completed, so as to establish humble-integrity “to ourselves and our Posterity.”

      Typically, philosophy reviews all opinion without recommending a conclusion. In other words, the typical professional philosopher claims not knowing the-ineluctable-truth by not sharing opinion. It’s a consequence of mutual-respect in a proprietary dialogue. I do not agree with the practice. For example, political philosopher Albert Einstein claimed, in my words, that physics and psychology follow the same laws: ineluctably-good people never lie so as to lessen human misery and loss.

Merriam-Webster informs us, perhaps by order of usage as I thought pertinent, philosophy means: 1) all learning exclusive of technical precepts and practical arts, 2) the sciences and liberal arts exclusive of medicine, law, and theology, 3) a discipline comprising as its core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology, 4) pursuit of wisdom, 5) a search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means, 6) an analysis of the grounds of and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs, 7) the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group and 8) (obsolete) physical science.

The Google ngram for the usages: learning, liberal arts, discipline, wisdom, values, reality, speculation, beliefs, attitudes shows interesting inversions toward learning in 1900 and both values and reality in 1920. Since then beliefs, wisdom, attitudes, discipline, speculation, and liberal arts, respectively, declined or remained steadily lower than the top three.

One of my all-time favorite college courses was “Philosophy of Science,” 1966, with lectures on Cecil J. Schneer’s book "The Evolution of Physical Science," 1961.

It seems evident that “philosophy” is a word defined by a speaker who is dedicated enough to review all that has been thought about a given word, such as “philosophy”. While the speaker is generous to share acquired information, the study method may not have found the most important thought about the word.

I think philosophy is the speaker’s attempt to address a worthy question with all known opinion so that the listener can choose an informed response to their question. I think the philosopher has the duty to share their opinion for their use making it clear that the listener is not invited to adopt it. Since the philosopher does not know, their opinion ought not be imposed on fellow-citizens.

For example, to the question, “Do you believe in God?” my response is: “What do you mean by the word “God”?

Depending on the response, I ask whether the listener chooses “God” to respond to necessity or to preference. For example, Socrates asked, in my view, “If goodness is needed, why attempt to substitute “God”?

If the listener’s grounding is in Bible interpretation, I ask if man and woman should “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28). If “Yes,” I ask if man and woman can assign the comprehension and work required to God.

If the listener seems uncertain and the dialogue may end, I share my thought that man and woman may appreciate each other, constrain chaos in their lives, and still nurture individual hope and comfort for each one’s afterdeath, that vast time after body, mind, and person stop functioning.

In my opinion, separating church and state is a necessity for human-integrity. The incompleteness of my example does not lessen the earning of my civic opinion while serving for 35 years as a chemical engineer. There’s a 3800-year-old Mesopotamian thought reported in Genesis 1:27-28 for man and woman: "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.” In the absence of evidence otherwise, the reader is constrained to ask, did “God” represent either necessity or the philosopher’s personal God? We men and women need not resolve the incentive to accept the suggestion: appreciate each other and constrain chaos in life.

Civilizations since then have focused on both issues: characterizing the God and developing the self-interest to constrain chaos in living. The power to constrain chaos may be expressed as virtues.

The four virtues emerged from Greek dialogues (2400 years ago) as prudence/wisdom, justice, temperance/moderation, and fortitude/courage. The proffered preamble to the U.S. Constitution, as I view it, proposes 5 disciplines: integrity, justice, peace, strength (also in defense), and prosperity. Integrity requires prudence/wisdom. Peace requires temperance and moderation, and strength is a synonym for fortitude and courage. If so, the preamble adds only prosperity, which is not unlike strength. The purpose of these propositions is responsible human independence: each person may constrain chaos in their life.

This year, 2020, seems regressing unto a modern abyss of political chaos. After sufficient misery and loss, a person may want relief, and the individual virtues offer collective viability to recover and establish a better future to ourselves and our posterity.

The charge, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it” seems awesome, and I appreciate being with spouse and we mutually work to constrain chaos.
